About the Calgary Chapter

JHR’s goal: “to make everyone in the world fully aware of their rights”

JHR’s (Journalists for Human Rights) goal is to make everyone in the world fully aware of their rights. Creating rights awareness is the first and most necessary step to eliminating rights abuses. Journalists for Human Rights is made up of individuals from around the world who use media to mobile global awareness and promote global equality. JHR is Canada’s largest international media development organization. Their goal is to make everyone in the world fully aware of their rights. People work together to promote global human rights awareness in holds of minimizing human rights abuses.This is done through efforts of community building such as fundraisers and educating through awareness campaigns such as letter writing campaigns.By mobilizing the media to spread human rights awareness, JHR informs people about human rights, empowering marginalized communities to stand up, speak out and protect themselves.

University of Calgary’s JHR Chapter

The University of Calgary (U of C) is located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The U of C JHR Chapter was first created in the year of 2011. The purpose of the club was to fulfill JHR’s goal by involving students from U of C in rights awareness and fundraising activities. In the past, our members of the club have been in involved in facilitating workshops to teach high school students about JHR. The club holds movie/documentary and debate nights to raise awareness about rights issues around the world, and often collaborates with other organizations to host informative symposiums.
